Wake Up

Released on August 24, 1990, Wake Up is the tenth and final studio album by the American R&B group Shalamar, issued via the SOLAR label. This record marks the second and final outing for the group's late-stage lineup consisting of Delisa Davis, Micki Free, and Sidney Justin. In a deliberate attempt to align with the contemporary urban music landscape of the era, the album heavily incorporates the then-dominant new jack swing style, characterized by aggressive drum machine programming, gated snares, and hip-hop-influenced tempos. Sonically, it represents a stark departure from the polished disco-soul that defined Shalamar's commercial peak in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Despite its contemporary production values, the album was a commercial disappointment, failing to register on either the US or UK charts and producing no charting singles. A notable highlight of the track listing is a lively, funk-infused cover of the Beatles' classic 'Come Together', which serves as a rare bridge between classic rock songwriting and late-era R&B production.
