Waltz for Koop

Released in 2002, Waltz for Koop is the magnum opus of Swedish duo Magnus Zingmark and Oscar Simonsson. While it appears to be a live jazz recording, the album is actually a monumental feat of sampling, constructed from thousands of tiny fragments of old records. This 'digital swing' approach allowed Koop to curate a specific sonic aesthetic that sounds more 'jazz' than jazz itself, capturing the idealized warmth of 1960s production. The album features iconic vocal contributions from Yukimi Nagano (later of Little Dragon), Earl Zinger, and Mikael Sundin, whose performances anchor the electronic architecture in human emotion. Critically, it was a breakthrough for the nu jazz genre, bridging the gap between the club-oriented acid jazz of the 90s and a more refined, orchestral lounge sound.
