Where Are You Now, My Son?

Released in 1973, 'Where Are You Now, My Son?' represents the absolute peak of Joan Baez's activism-meets-artistry. While the A-side contains standard studio-recorded folk songs - including the poignant 'Less Than the Song' - the B-side is a landmark in experimental folk. During a visit to Hanoi in December 1972, Baez brought a portable tape recorder to document her experience during the 'Christmas Bombings.' The resulting title track is a 21-minute audio documentary. It utilizes musique concrète techniques, layering field recordings of sirens, explosions, and local voices with her own improvised singing and spoken reflections. This was a radical departure from her previous work, moving away from the 'pure' folk aesthetic into a gritty, avant-garde realism.
