White Rabbit

Released in 1971, White Rabbit represents the pinnacle of George Benson's 'CTI Era,' a period characterized by high-concept production and a shift toward jazz fusion. Arranged by Don Sebesky, the album is famous for its 'Spanish-flavored' aesthetic, most notably on the title track and the epic closer 'El Mar.' The latter features the recording debut of Earl Klugh, who was only 17 at the time. Sonically, the album is a masterclass in the CTI house style: Rudy Van Gelder’s warm, punchy engineering paired with Sebesky’s sophisticated, often dark orchestral layering. While Benson would later achieve massive commercial success as a vocalist, White Rabbit is primarily an instrumental showcase for his guitar virtuosity, though it includes atmospheric wordless vocals from Airto Moreira. It earned Benson his first Grammy nomination and remains a critical favorite for its bold, thematic consistency and its successful bridge between classical structures, Latin rhythms, and jazz improvisation.
