Wishmaster

Released in 2000, Wishmaster is the pivotal third studio album by Nightwish, marking the moment they transitioned from underground Finnish favorites to international symphonic metal leaders. Following the breakthrough of Oceanborn, Wishmaster refined the band's sound by emphasizing melody and atmosphere over pure speed. The album is famously inspired by fantasy literature, specifically the works of J.R.R. Tolkien and Margaret Weis/Tracy Hickman's Dragonlance series. Despite its massive success, primary songwriter Tuomas Holopainen has described it as one of his least personal works, though it introduced the 'Dead Boy' motif that would become a recurring theme in the band's later discography. The recording process was notably smoother than its predecessor, resulting in a cohesive, polished sound that remains a benchmark for the genre. It was also one of the first major metal albums to suffer from a significant internet leak, forcing an early release.
