Frenetic Japanese rock that pairs hyperactive, surf-influenced guitar leads with post-hardcore intensity. High-velocity music for high-stakes moments.
9mm Parabellum Bullet sounds like a high-speed collision between traditional Japanese melodic sensibilities and the raw, unhinged energy of early 2000s post-hardcore. Their sound is defined by a relentless forward momentum, characterized by Takuro Sugawara's smooth but urgent vocals set against a backdrop of chaotic, almost violent instrumentation. The guitars don't just play riffs; they spiral and shriek in complex, twin-lead patterns that often borrow from surf rock and heavy metal.
What truly distinguishes them is the 'controlled chaos' of their rhythm section. The drumming is notoriously fast and technical, utilizing double-bass patterns more common in metal than indie rock, while the bass provides a distorted, percussive foundation. This is punctuated by sudden, jarring 'shouts' that break through the melodic surface, creating a tension that feels like it could snap at any second.
For those new to the band, the 'Greatest Hits' or 'Dawning' are the ideal entry points. They showcase the band's ability to write massive, catchy choruses without sacrificing the technical complexity or the frantic, 'bullet-like' speed that gave them their name.
9mm Parabellum Bullet (Japanese: キューミリ・パラベラム・バレット, Hepburn: Kyūmiri Paraberamu Baretto) is a Japanese rock band, formed in Yokohama in March 2004. The classic lineup featured vocalist and rhythm guitarist Takuro Sugawara, guitarist and backing vocalist Yoshimitsu Taki, bassist Kazuhiko Nakamura, and drummer Chihiro Kamijo, who came up with the band's name. Piano pieces included in some songs are performed by Taki, while the characteristic shouts are provided by Nakamura. After 21 years, Kamijo left the band at the end of 2025.
