Formed in Lowestoft, Suffolk in 1993, A (originally Grand Designs) evolved from a progressive rock outfit into one of the UK's most successful alternative rock acts of the early 2000s. Led by the Perry brothers, the band carved out a niche by blending the aggression of skate punk with the melodic sensibilities of power pop and the electronic flourishes of new wave.
Their breakthrough came with the 2002 album Hi-Fi Serious, which yielded the top 10 single Nothing and established them as a major live draw. Critically, they were often grouped with the 'Brit-rock' movement alongside bands like Feeder and Hundred Reasons, yet they maintained a distinct identity through Jason Perry's charismatic, often humorous delivery and the band's willingness to incorporate prominent synthesizers. Despite a mid-2000s decline following the delayed release of Teen Dance Ordinance, they remain a cult favorite and a significant influence on the UK's pop-punk and post-hardcore scenes, with bassist Daniel P. Carter becoming a prominent tastemaker in the rock media.
