High-energy alternative rock with soaring vocals and shimmering synths. Polished, anthemic, and built for big rooms and bigger emotions.
Abandon delivers a brand of alternative rock that feels designed for the rafters. It is characterized by a bright, polished sheen where every instrument is dialed for maximum impact. The guitars often utilize rhythmic delay and shimmering textures, while the synthesizers provide a thick, melodic foundation that pushes the energy toward a cinematic scale.
What truly sets them apart is the vocal performance of Josh Engler. His delivery is often compared to the dramatic, earnest style of Brandon Flowers, moving from rhythmic verses into explosive, belting choruses. The production is unmistakably hi-fi, utilizing dense layering to create a wall of sound that feels both massive and meticulously organized.
Listeners should start with the album Control. It represents the peak of their radio-ready sound, blending the grit of early 2000s indie rock with the soaring, spiritual optimism that defines their lyrical perspective. It is music for moments that require a surge of momentum and a sense of possibility.
Abandon is an American Christian rock band from San Antonio, Texas. The group had five members: brothers Josh (lead vocals) and Justin Engler (guitar), cousins Stevan (guitar) and Dave Vela (drums), and Bryan Fowler (bass). Abandon signed with ForeFront Records in late 2007, and released the Abandon EP in July 2008. Their first single, "Providence", was released to radio in August. It reached No. 7 on R&R's Christian rock charts. The group's name was inspired by the Bible verse: "And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me" (Matthew 10:38).
