Acrania

Acrania emerged from the London underground in 2012 as a pivotal force in the 'slam deathcore' subgenre. Led by vocalist Luke Griffin and guitarist Jack Simmons, the band carved out a niche by blending the rhythmic 'slams' of brutal death metal with the high-production sheen and breakdown-heavy structure of deathcore.

Their sound identity is built on Simmons' ultra-tight, percussive riffing and Griffin's versatile vocal range, which includes some of the most distinctive 'cricket' and 'pig squeal' techniques in the genre. Culturally, they positioned themselves as a voice of dissent, utilizing dystopian and anti-capitalist themes that resonated with a disillusioned youth. Simmons later founded the influential label Unique Leader Records, further cementing the band's legacy in the extreme metal business. Critical consensus often highlights their technical proficiency and the sheer speed of their delivery, which pushed the boundaries of how much information could be packed into a deathcore track.
