Acrylics is the Brooklyn-based project of Molly Shea and Jason Klauber, formed in 2008 following the dissolution of their previous band, Standing Nudes. Their sound is characterized by a sophisticated blend of dream pop, indie pop, and art rock, heavily influenced by the 'Dunedin Sound' of New Zealand and the experimental spirit of the late-2000s Brooklyn scene.
Their debut EP, 'All of the Fire', released on Chris Taylor's Terrible Records, established them as critical darlings, earning 'Rising' status from Pitchfork. The duo's work is notable for its use of unconventional guitar tunings and a production style that bridges the gap between lo-fi intimacy and high-fidelity studio polish. Collaborations with members of MGMT, Chairlift, and Grizzly Bear place them at the heart of a specific era of American indie music that sought to reinvent pop through a psychedelic, often nostalgic lens. Their later work, such as 'DADA minor', continued to explore the intersection of the confessional and the fantastical, maintaining a reputation for meticulous, color-rich arrangements.
