Dusty electric pianos and skeletal drum machines backing vivid, deadpan stories of Midwestern isolation. Intimate, melancholic, and deeply human lo-fi pop.
Advance Base is the solo project of Chicago-based musician Owen Ashworth, launched in 2011 following the retirement of his influential Casiotone for the Painfully Alone moniker. The transition marked a shift from the abrasive, distorted lo-fi electronics of his early career toward a warmer, more organic 'Rhodes-and-drum-machine' aesthetic.
His sound is defined by a minimalist approach to arrangement, often utilizing vintage electric pianos (Rhodes, Wurlitzer) and primitive rhythm boxes to create a bed for his narrative-heavy songwriting. Ashworth is a master of the 'suburban gothic' genre, writing detailed character studies that explore themes of isolation, nostalgia, and the quiet desperation of domestic life. His work is highly regarded in the indie-pop and lo-fi communities for its emotional honesty and unique sonic palette. He occupies a similar cultural space to artists like Bill Callahan or Phil Elverum, where the limitations of the recording medium are used as an expressive tool. Ashworth also runs Orindal Records, further cementing his role as a curator of intimate, idiosyncratic American songwriting.
