Akira Kiteshi

Akira Kiteshi, the alias of Edinburgh-based producer Tommy Forrest, emerged as a pivotal figure in the late 2000s 'tear-out' dubstep movement. His sound identity is defined by a unique synthesis of heavy bass weight, glitch aesthetics, and a background in hip-hop production.

Unlike many of his contemporaries who leaned into the 'wobble' cliché, Kiteshi maintained a technical complexity reminiscent of IDM, utilizing intricate drum programming and sharp, metallic sound design. His debut 'Pinball' was a cross-genre success, gaining support from diverse tastemakers like Mary Anne Hobbs and Mixmaster Mike, signaling his appeal to both the dubstep and turntablist communities. His career arc saw him move from basement clubs in Scotland to international festival stages, consistently pushing a sound that was more aggressive and industrial than the London-centric 'deep' dubstep sound.
