Alejandro Escovedo

Alejandro Escovedo is a foundational figure in the Americana and alternative country movements, though his roots are firmly planted in punk and glam rock. Emerging from the 1970s San Francisco punk scene with The Nuns, he later pioneered 'cowpunk' with Rank and File before forming the True Believers.

His solo career, beginning with 1992's Gravity, saw him synthesize these disparate influences into a sophisticated roots-rock aesthetic often characterized by the inclusion of string sections (the 'orchestral' side of his sound) alongside gritty guitar work. His cultural position is that of a 'musician's musician,' evidenced by the massive tribute album Por Vida released during his health crisis in 2004.
