Algebra

Algebra is an Italian progressive rock ensemble originating from Benevento, formed in the early 1980s. While their output has been sporadic, they are highly regarded within the RPI (Rock Progressivo Italiano) community for their sophisticated arrangements and adherence to the genre's golden-era aesthetics.

Their sound identity is rooted in the symphonic prog of the 1970s, specifically drawing influence from the pastoral side of Genesis and the melodic complexity of PFM. The band's career arc is marked by long hiatuses, with their debut 'Storia di un Iceberg' arriving in 1994 and its successor 'JL' not appearing until 2009. This second album, a concept work based on Jonathan Livingston Seagull, solidified their reputation for high-concept storytelling. Critically, they are praised for avoiding the 'neo-prog' clichés of the 90s in favor of a more organic, vintage sound. Their 2019 release, 'Deconstructing Classics', further highlighted their musicality by reinterpreting influential works through their unique symphonic lens. They occupy a niche as a 'musician's band' within the global progressive rock scene.
