Formed in 1985, ALI PROJECT is a seminal Japanese duo consisting of vocalist Arika Takarano and composer Mikiya Katakura. While they began with a lighter, 'Shiro Ari' (White Alice) sound characterized by synth-pop and romantic themes, they underwent a major stylistic shift in the late 1990s toward 'Kuro Ari' (Black Alice).
This darker phase integrated Gothic Lolita fashion, industrial music, and darkwave, cementing their status as icons of the Gothic subculture in Japan. Their sound identity is built on Katakura's 'sampling' approach to classical motifs, often repurposing melodies from composers like Chopin or Bach into modern, beat-driven structures. Takarano's lyrics are noted for their complexity, utilizing archaic kanji and philosophical themes. They gained massive international recognition through their work on anime soundtracks such as Rozen Maiden and Code Geass. Critically, they are viewed as a bridge between the Visual Kei movement and the more experimental fringes of J-pop, maintaining a prolific output that defies easy categorization by blending high-art classicism with subcultural grit.
