Alians

High-octane Polish punk that trades typical aggression for a wild blend of accordion, brass, and anarchist reggae. Raw, political, and impossible to stand still to.

Intro

Alians sounds like a street protest that accidentally turned into a carnival. It is built on the skeletal frame of 90s Polish punk, but it is fleshed out with the wheezing, frantic energy of an accordion and a punchy brass section. The music moves between the jagged speed of hardcore and the relaxed, sun-drenched skank of reggae, often within the same track. It feels lived-in, dusty, and fiercely independent.

What truly sets them apart is the intellectual weight behind the noise. Frontman Rafal Kasprzak, a literature teacher by day, crafts lyrics that are far more sophisticated than standard punk fare, drawing on anarchist philosophy and Latin American revolutionary history. The presence of the accordion gives the music a folk-like, communal quality that makes the political messaging feel like a shared conversation rather than a lecture.

Start with the album Gavroche. It captures the band at their most iconic, blending the 'urchin' street aesthetic with the high-energy ska-punk fusion that defined the Polish underground in the mid-90s. It is the perfect entry point for anyone who wants their punk with a bit of swing and a lot of substance.

Alians is a Polish punk-rock, reggae and ska band, founded in 1990 in Piła. Alians' first concert took place on May 19, 1990, in Bydgoszcz, with three founding members: Rafał Kasprzak (guit, voc.), Michał Thiede (bg) and Dariusz Kułak (drums). The band features punky reggae - a unique mix of the three kinds of music mentioned above. Apart from usual instruments, such as guitars, bass and drums, its members also use trumpets, accordion, trombone and saxophone. Alians is known for its politically engaged lyrics, inspired by such bands as The Clash and Dead Kennedys and by Anarchism as well as left-wing political movements from Latin America. Until November 2007, Alians has played 470 concerts, not only in Poland, but also in several countries of Europe (Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Slovakia, Norway, Lithuania, England), together with such groups as Fugazi, The Ukrainians, No Means No and Chumbawamba. Even though the band is regarded as one of the most popular underground groups in Poland, its popularity is limited, as it is not featured in mainstream mass-media.
