Formed in 1987, their sound is defined by Jerry Cantrell’s signature 'sludge' guitar style - characterized by chromaticism and heavy use of the wah-pedal - and the haunting vocal harmonies originally pioneered by Cantrell and the late Layne Staley.
Unlike the punk-rooted sound of Nirvana, Alice in Chains drew heavily from Black Sabbath and Van Halen, infusing their work with a doom-laden weight and technical precision. Their career arc is marked by massive commercial success with 'Dirt' and 'Jar of Flies' (the first EP to top the Billboard 200), followed by a tragic hiatus due to Staley's addiction and eventual death in 2002. The band’s 2006 resurrection with William DuVall proved remarkably resilient, maintaining their sonic identity while evolving into a respected elder-statesman role in rock. Critically, they are lauded for their unflinching lyrical honesty regarding addiction and depression, influencing a generation of post-grunge and nu-metal acts.
