Intro

Amadeus was a pivotal, if short-lived, project within the 1990s Japanese visual kei scene, specifically the 'kote-kote' and gothic sub-movements. Formed in 1996 by former members of After Image, the band distinguished itself through a radical rejection of rock instrumentation in favor of a neoclassical, keyboard-centric sound.

Led by Hiron's virtuosic keyboard work and the dual-vocal attack of Seiji and the soprano Nene, the band explored themes of historical tragedy and romanticism. Their decision to use a drum machine instead of a live drummer gave their music a rigid, almost industrial backbone that contrasted sharply with their baroque melodic sensibilities. Seiji, the band's primary male vocalist, would later achieve significant fame as Seth, the frontman for Mana's Moi dix Mois, making Amadeus a critical link in the lineage of Japanese gothic rock. Their discography, though small, remains a cult favorite for its unique 'guitarless' approach to darkwave, influencing the more symphonic and theatrical elements of the scene that followed.
