Formed in 2007 as a side project for Dewa 19 guitarist Andra Ramadhan, Andra and the BackBone quickly evolved into a powerhouse of the Indonesian rock scene. While Dewa 19 leaned into eclectic pop and orchestral rock, the BackBone allowed Ramadhan to explore a more guitar-centric, alternative rock identity alongside Stevie Item and vocalist Deddy Lisan.
Their sound is characterized by high-gain guitar textures, blues-influenced soloing, and a rhythmic tightness that reflects the members' session-musician backgrounds. Critically, the band is noted for bridging the gap between the 'Indo-pop' balladry of the early 2000s and a more aggressive, Western-influenced alternative sound. Their debut album remains a landmark in Southeast Asian rock, featuring 'Musnah,' a track that defined the era's radio landscape. The band's influence persists in the way they elevated the technical standards for guitar performance in Indonesian mainstream music, maintaining a legacy of 'guitar hero' rock in a pop-dominant market.
