Andromeda

Andromeda emerged from the late 90s Swedish metal scene as a sophisticated alternative to the dominant melodic death metal sound of the region. Formed in 1999 by guitarist Johan Reinholdz, the band quickly established a reputation for extreme technical proficiency.

Their debut, 'Extension of the Wish', is considered a landmark of the 'second wave' of progressive metal, bridging the gap between the traditional Dream Theater influence and a more modern, aggressive European sensibility. Throughout the 2000s, the band evolved from pure technical exhibitionism toward a more thematic and socially conscious approach, particularly on albums like 'Manifest Tyranny'. Reinholdz's dual role in Andromeda and the melodic death metal band Nonexist has allowed him to infuse Andromeda with a sharper edge than many 'power-prog' contemporaries. Critically, they are lauded for their rhythmic complexity and the seamless integration of keyboards as a primary lead instrument rather than mere atmospheric padding. Despite a hiatus since 2016, they remain a foundational reference point for the 'Swedish Prog' sound alongside acts like Pain of Salvation.
