C. in 1975, Angel was the 'angelic' counterpoint to KISS on Casablanca Records.
Discovered by Gene Simmons, the band became famous for their elaborate stage shows involving illusions and an all-white wardrobe. Musically, they occupied a unique space between glam, hard rock, and progressive rock. Keyboardist Gregg Giuffria provided a symphonic backbone that influenced the later 80s 'hair metal' and AOR scenes, while Punky Meadows became a cult guitar hero. Despite critical acclaim for their early 'pomp rock' albums like 'Angel' and 'Helluva Band', they struggled to achieve the same commercial heights as their labelmates. Their influence is most visible in the transition from 70s prog-rock to 80s melodic hard rock, with Giuffria later finding success in the band House of Lords. The band remains a significant touchstone for collectors of 70s arena rock and theatrical glam.
