Apex Manor is the primary creative vehicle for Ross Flournoy, emerging from the dissolution of his previous band, The Broken West. Formed in 2010 in Pasadena, the project was born out of a prolific songwriting burst triggered by an NPR contest.
Their sound is a sophisticated evolution of the Merge Records aesthetic, blending the melodic sensibilities of Big Star with the fuzzy, earnest indie rock of the 1990s. The debut album, 'The Year of Magical Drinking' (2011), established Flournoy as a master of the bittersweet hook, exploring themes of transition and recovery. After a significant hiatus, the band returned with 'Heartbreak City' in 2019, which leaned further into a gritty, expansive rock sound while maintaining their signature melodic core. Critically, they are regarded as torchbearers for California power pop, praised for their ability to balance polished studio craft with raw emotional honesty. They occupy a space in the indie ecosystem alongside peers like Mac McCaughan and Superchunk, appealing to listeners who value songcraft over stylistic trends.
