Appleton was formed in 2002 by sisters Natalie and Nicole Appleton following the initial dissolution of the multi-platinum UK girl group All Saints. While their parent group was known for a blend of R&B and pop, Appleton veered into a more experimental, melancholic electropop territory.
Their sole studio album, 'Everything's Eventual' (2003), remains a cult favorite for its high production values and refusal to adhere to standard pop tropes of the era. Working with producers like Gareth Young and Andy Hayman, they crafted a sound that incorporated elements of trip-hop, chamber pop, and synth-pop. Critically, they were often compared to their All Saints contemporary Shaznay Lewis, but with a colder, more European electronic edge. Despite significant chart success with singles like 'Fantasy' and 'Don't Worry', the project was sidelined when All Saints reformed in 2006. Their work is now viewed as a precursor to the 'sad girl' pop aesthetic, prized by collectors for its moody atmosphere and sophisticated vocal arrangements.
