Intro

ApSci sounds like a high-speed collision between a gritty Brooklyn basement and a futuristic Australian art gallery. It is music that refuses to sit still, characterized by Ra Lamotta’s sharp, technical rap delivery and Dana Diaz-Tutaan’s lush, often operatic vocal arrangements. The production is a playground of digital artifacts, where machine-gun percussion and unexpected electronic 'bleeps' create a dense, jittery landscape that somehow remains melodic and accessible.

What truly distinguishes the duo is their refusal to follow the standard hip-hop blueprint. They treat the voice as a malleable instrument, layering harmonies in ways that feel more like Bjork or avant-pop than traditional rap. There is a palpable sense of movement in their work, likely a result of their nomadic recording process across New York, Sydney, and Malaysia. It is 'applied science' in musical form: experimental, calculated, yet deeply human.

Start with 'Best Crisis Ever' to hear their most refined evolution. It captures the perfect balance between their underground hip-hop roots and their later, more expansive interest in genre-bending pop. Tracks like 'Crazy Crazy Insane' showcase the unique chemistry of Ra’s rhythmic complexity and Dana’s soaring, melodic counterpoints.

ApSci is an Australian video-centric avant pop duo with origins in indie hip hop. As individuals, their roots go back to punk rock and opera. The duo consists of Bronx born, New Jersey-bred Ra Lamotta and his Filipino-Australian wife Dana Diaz-Tutaan. The duo, which has been performing together since meeting in 1998, has received added attention after being signed to underground hip hop label Quannum Projects in 2004. The band name is a portmanteau of "applied science."
