Gritty, earnest punk rock with a hidden country heart. It sounds like a late-night confession at a dive bar where the jukebox only plays the classics.
Armchair Martian occupies that specific, dusty corner of the musical map where the high-speed energy of 90s punk meets the weary storytelling of alt-country. Their sound is defined by Jon Snodgrass's unmistakable raspy vocals, which carry a sense of lived-in wisdom and self-effacing humor. It is music that feels both urgent and relaxed, like a group of friends who have been playing together long enough to stop trying to impress anyone.
What makes them distinctive is the way they bridge the gap between the melodic hardcore of the Descendents and the rural ache of Uncle Tupelo. While many 'cowpunk' bands lean into the gimmick, Armchair Martian feels authentic to both worlds. The guitars are loud and distorted, but the songwriting structure often mirrors traditional folk and country, focusing on narrative and emotional honesty rather than just speed.
Start with 'Hang On Ted' or 'Who Wants To Play Bass?' to hear them at their most cohesive. These albums perfectly capture their ability to write catchy, anthemic hooks that still feel like they were recorded in a drafty Colorado garage. It is the ideal soundtrack for anyone who grew up on skate punk but eventually found themselves listening to more Townes Van Zandt.
Armchair Martian, formed in 1993, is an American trio based out of Fort Collins, Colorado. They are a punk and alt-country band influenced by Descendents, Hüsker Dü, and Uncle Tupelo. They have put out numerous recordings through four record labels, the latest being Suburban Home which released the Good Guys, Bad Band album (a compilation of out of print material) in 2007 and re-issued their Who Wants to Play Bass? LP. Singer Jon Snodgrass later moved on to form Drag the River. The band has formed a close friendship with punk rock bands Lagwagon and Bad Astronaut, particularly main songwriter and vocalist of both groups Joey Cape. Both Cape and Snodgrass have been known to frequently cover each other's songs on numerous releases, including a split EP with Bad Astronaut in 2001 titled War of the Worlds. The two also collaborated on two albums from the band Scorpios, also featuring Tony Sly, Brian Wahlstrom, and Chris Cresswell.
