Intro

Arthur Baker's sound is the definitive bridge between the mechanical precision of European electronic music and the raw, rhythmic energy of New York street culture. It is characterized by booming TR-808 drum patterns, sharp orchestral stabs, and a sense of futuristic urgency that feels both retro and timeless. The music hits with a physical weight, designed specifically for large sound systems and high-impact movement.

What makes Baker truly distinctive is his mastery of the 'remix' as a creative tool. He doesn't just produce songs; he deconstructs them using aggressive tape edits, dub-style echoes, and layered synthesis. While his peers were often tied to live instrumentation, Baker leaned into the 'machine' sound, creating a template for electro and freestyle that favored synthetic textures over organic warmth, yet never lost the soul of the groove.

For those looking to understand the evolution of dance music, start with the landmark Afrika Bambaataa collaborations like 'Planet Rock' or his work with New Order on 'Confusion.' These tracks showcase his ability to take pop and rock sensibilities and submerge them in a bath of heavy-duty electronic percussion and innovative sampling techniques.

Arthur Baker (born April 22, 1955) is an American record producer and DJ best known for his work with hip-hop artists like Afrika Bambaataa and Planet Patrol, as well as British band New Order. He is also known for remixing the Jill Jones song "Mia Bocca" on the 12" single, taken from her self-titled debut album Jill Jones (1987), released on Prince's Paisley Park Records, as well as remixing the Pet Shop Boys song, "In the Night". His remix of the song was used as the main theme for the BBC TV programme The Clothes Show between 1986 and 1994. He also remixed the "Massive Jungle Mix" for Tina Turner's UK top 40 single "Whatever You Want" (co-written by himself, Taylor Dayne and Fred Zarr). Arthur Baker's songs are represented by Downtown Music Publishing.
