Asrai

Asrai is a seminal Dutch gothic metal band formed in 1988 in Schiedam. Initially emerging from the late-80s underground demo scene, the band evolved from a raw, darkwave-influenced sound into a polished, professional metal act.

Their career is marked by long gaps between releases, which has allowed them to refine a distinctive sonic identity that prioritizes atmosphere and melody over technical brutality. Their 2004 breakthrough, 'Touch in the Dark', produced by Roman Schoensee and mixed by Sascha Paeth, solidified their position in the European gothic scene alongside contemporaries like Within Temptation and The Gathering, though Asrai retained a stronger connection to traditional gothic rock and post-punk roots. Critically, they are respected for their consistency and the high-register, ethereal vocal delivery of frontwoman Margriet Mol. Their influence is most felt in the 'female-fronted' metal subgenre where they are seen as early pioneers of the more melodic, less symphonic side of the spectrum. Despite limited commercial output in the 2010s, they remain a cult favorite within the international gothic community.
