Astral

Astral is a Czech symphonic black metal entity formed in 1996 in Český Těšín. Led by the core duo of Maestro and Sammael, the band emerged during the peak of the second wave's symphonic expansion.

Their sound identity is built on a foundation of melodic black metal tropes: high-pitched rasps, minor-key tremolo riffs, and blast-beat percussion, but it is heavily augmented by prominent keyboard work. This synth-forward approach aligns them with the '90s 'Nightside' aesthetic, emphasizing atmosphere and occult romanticism. Their career arc is defined by their early cult releases, 'Magia Eon' and 'Filicetum Lunare', which are regarded as significant artifacts of the Czech underground scene. Critically, they are viewed as a bridge between the raw aggression of early black metal and the more theatrical, melodic styles that followed. Their influence is primarily felt within regional circles and among collectors of obscure European black metal, where their ability to balance lo-fi production with ambitious, pseudo-classical arrangements is highly valued.
