Ausgang

Twisted, erratic post-punk with tribal rhythms and a jagged edge. It is the sound of a 1980s Batcave basement collapsing in slow motion. Raw, wild, and unpredictable.

Intro

Ausgang emerged from the Birmingham UK scene in 1983, evolving from an earlier project called Kabuki. They became central figures in the 'Batcave' movement, a sub-genre of Gothic Rock that prioritized tribal rhythms, theatricality, and a jagged, post-punk edge.

Their sound identity is built on the interplay between Max's raspy, unconventional vocals and a rhythm section that frequently employed complex, shifting time signatures. This technical complexity distinguished them from more straightforward goth-rock peers. Culturally, they represented the 'post-apocalyptic rover' aesthetic of the mid-80s underground, characterized by extreme visual styles and high-intensity stage shows. Despite critical interest and a spot in Mick Mercer's definitive Gothic Rock chronicles, the band struggled with the 'Goth' label, eventually attempting a stylistic pivot as 'Ausgang-A-Go-Go' before disbanding in the late 80s. They reformed in 2004, cementing their status as a cult legacy act within the international darkwave and deathrock circuits. Their influence is most felt in the 'deathrock revival' scenes that value raw, unpolished production and rhythmic experimentation over polished synth-pop textures.
