Author is a collaborative project between Leeds-based producers Jack Sparrow and Ruckspin, established figures in the UK dubstep scene who sought to move beyond the constraints of the dancefloor. Formed following their 2010 collaboration 'Dread,' the project represents a pivot toward a more 'musical' and acoustic-leaning interpretation of bass music.

Their sound is characterized by the integration of live session musicians, including brass and upright bass, into a framework of deep sub-bass and syncopated percussion. This approach aligns them with the 'post-dubstep' movement and the legacy of labels like Mo' Wax and Ninja Tune. Critically, Author is seen as a bridge between the sound system culture of the 2000s and the sophisticated downtempo of the 1990s, specifically referencing the influence of Kruder & Dorfmeister. Their debut on Pinch's Tectonic label marked a significant moment for the genre, signaling a shift toward high-fidelity, album-oriented compositions that prioritize atmosphere and organic texture over club utility.
