Badmarsh & Shri emerged from the fertile ground of London's Outcaste Records in the late 1990s, a label central to the British Asian Underground. The duo consists of DJ Badmarsh (Mohammed Akber Ali) and multi-instrumentalist Shri (Shrikanth Sriram).
Their collaboration is a study in contrast: Badmarsh brought the sensibilities of a club DJ and reggae sound system culture, while Shri brought a background in Indian classical music and jazz, having previously worked with Nitin Sawhney. Their debut, 'Dancing Drums' (1998), established a blueprint for 'Indo-fusion' that avoided orientalist clichés by focusing on the rhythmic commonalities between drum and bass and tabla. Their follow-up, 'Signs' (2001), saw them lean further into organic songwriting and live instrumentation, featuring soulful vocals and intricate arrangements. Critically, they are positioned alongside Talvin Singh and Nitin Sawhney as architects of a sound that redefined British identity through electronic music.
