Bang

Heavy, fuzzed-out proto-metal from the early 70s. Raw power trio energy that bridges the gap between psychedelic blues and the birth of doom rock.

Intro

Bang is a seminal but frequently overlooked power trio from Philadelphia, formed in 1969. They are widely regarded by collectors and music historians as one of the most important American proto-metal acts, predating the formalization of doom metal.

Their sound is characterized by the heavy, minor-key riffing of Frank Ferrara and Tony Diorio, heavily influenced by the UK's first wave of heavy rock but infused with a US garage rock sensibility. Their career was marked by label interference; their ambitious concept debut, 'Death of a Country', was shelved by Capitol Records in favor of a more straightforward hard rock sound on their self-titled 1971 release. Despite a brief initial run and a mid-70s breakup, their influence persisted through the stoner rock and doom metal underground, leading to a critical re-evaluation in the 2000s. They occupy a similar space to Sir Lord Baltimore and Dust, representing the 'lost' heavy 70s sound that prioritized analog warmth and raw, uncompressed energy.
