Bardo Pond

Dense, druggy layers of distorted guitar and ethereal flute. A slow-motion collision of shoegaze haze and heavy psychedelic sludge for deep immersion.

Intro

Bardo Pond sounds like a thick, purple fog rolling over a landscape of jagged mountains. It is music that moves at the speed of molasses, where massive, distorted guitar riffs are softened by the breathy, haunting presence of a flute and ghostly vocals. The sound is heavy but never aggressive, creating a sense of weightless suspension within a wall of white noise and feedback.

What truly sets them apart is the interplay between the brothers' crushing guitar work and Isobel Sollenberger's delicate, almost jazz-like flute lines. While many space rock bands aim for the stars, Bardo Pond feels more subterranean, digging deep into the earth and the subconscious. Their songs often feel like long, deliberate sound explorations that prioritize texture and mood over traditional verse-chorus structures.

Start with the album Amanita to experience their peak 90s sound. It captures the perfect balance of their 'sludge-gaze' aesthetic, offering a gateway into their world of esoteric substances and sonic expansion. It is the ideal soundtrack for when you want to disappear into the music entirely.

Bardo Pond is an American psychedelic rock band formed in 1991. It consists of Michael Gibbons (guitar), John Gibbons (guitar), Isobel Sollenberger (flute and vocals), Clint Takeda (bass guitar) and Jason Kourkounis (drums). Bardo Pond's music is often classified as space rock, acid rock, post-rock, shoegazing, noise or psychedelic rock. Some Bardo Pond album titles have been derived from the names of esoteric psychedelic substances. Their sound has been likened to Pink Floyd, Spacemen 3 and My Bloody Valentine amongst others. Allmusic describes Bardo Pond as having "lengthy, deliberate sound explorations filled with all the hallmarks of modern-day space rock: droning guitars, thick distortion, feedback, reverb, and washes of white noise." Bardo Pond are a taper-friendly band who encourage fans to make recordings of their shows.
