Basco

Basco is a primary alias for the prolific Dutch production duo Gaston Steenkist and René ter Horst, better known globally as Chocolate Puma or ZKI & Dobre. Operating out of Haarlem, the duo used the Basco moniker in the late 1990s to explore a tougher, more sample-driven sound that sat between the burgeoning tech-house scene and the UK's big beat explosion.

Their work under this name, particularly the 1999 album 'High Involvement', is a masterclass in the 'Dutch House' sound of the era: characterized by heavy compression, filtered disco samples, and a distinctively aggressive swing. While the name Basco is also shared by a Danish folk group and contemporary Soundcloud rappers, the Dutch duo remains the most historically significant iteration, representing a bridge between early 90s rave culture and the more polished house music of the 2000s. Their influence is felt in the works of artists who prioritize rhythmic density and 'groove-first' songwriting over traditional pop structures.
