Battles emerged in 2002 as a supergroup of the American underground, featuring Ian Williams (Don Caballero) and John Stanier (Helmet). Their sound identity is built on the tension between Stanier's rigid, powerhouse drumming and Williams' fluid use of Gibson Echoplex looping stations to layer guitar and keyboard motifs.
The early era was defined by Tyondai Braxton's avant-garde vocal processing, which treated the human voice as a modular synthesizer component. Following Braxton's departure, the band evolved into a more collaborative project with guest vocalists on 'Gloss Drop' before streamlining into a lean, rhythmic duo.
