Bauer is the primary creative vehicle for Dutch musician Berend Dubbe, formerly the drummer for the influential indie rock band Bettie Serveert. Founded in Amsterdam in 1999, the project initially emerged as a solo outlet for Dubbe's fascination with high-concept pop and orchestral arrangements.
Between 2000 and 2006, Bauer expanded into a duo with Sonja van Hamel, a period that yielded their most critically acclaimed work, including the Zilveren Harp-winning album 'Can't Stop Singing'. Their sound identity is rooted in the 'chamber pop' tradition, drawing heavy influence from the melodic sophistication of Brian Wilson and the dramatic vocal arrangements of Scott Walker. Culturally, Bauer occupies a unique space in the Dutch 'Excelsior Recordings' scene, bridging the gap between indie-pop and formal orchestral composition. After a decade-long hiatus, Dubbe revived the name in 2016 for 'Eyes Fully Open', further leaning into cinematic and avant-pop territories. The project is highly regarded by collectors of 'Baroque Pop' and 'Chamber Pop' for its uncompromising production standards and its ability to synthesize 1960s lounge aesthetics with contemporary indie sensibilities.
