Beanfield

Beanfield is a cornerstone project of the Munich-based Compost Records, spearheaded by Jan Krause and Michael Mettke. Emerging in the mid-1990s, they became central figures in the 'Future Jazz' or 'Nu-Jazz' movement, which sought to bridge the gap between traditional jazz instrumentation and modern electronic production.

Jan Krause's background with the Poets of Rhythm brought a deep understanding of authentic funk and soul aesthetics to the group's electronic foundations. Their sound identity is defined by high-fidelity production, analog warmth, and a specific focus on the 'Broken Beat' rhythm - a syncopated, jerky drum pattern that differentiates them from the four-to-the-floor house music of the era. Critically, they are lauded for avoiding the 'coffee table' clichés of lounge music by maintaining a rigorous musicality and complex harmonic structure. Their influence extends to the global downtempo scene, having been championed by tastemakers like Gilles Peterson.
