Intricate, organic hip-hop that pairs theological depth with glitchy folk textures. It sounds like a quiet forest floor meeting a high-end studio.
Beautiful Eulogy creates a sound that is remarkably difficult to pin down, existing in the fertile ground between experimental hip-hop, indie folk, and traditional hymnody. Their music feels like a physical space: a warm, wood-paneled room where every sound - from the click of a typewriter to the swell of a cello - is placed with intentionality. It is rhythmically complex but emotionally grounding, offering a sense of weight and gravity that is rare in modern production.
What truly distinguishes them is the interplay between Courtland Urbano’s idiosyncratic production and the dense, poetic lyricism of Braille and Odd Thomas. Instead of standard boom-bap loops, you’ll hear glitched-out acoustic guitars, found-sound percussion, and lush orchestral layers that feel more like a film score than a rap beat. The vocals are delivered with a calm, authoritative precision, often leaning into spoken-word cadences that demand a listener's full intellectual and spiritual attention.
Start with the album 'Instruments of Mercy' to hear their vision at its most realized. It’s the perfect entry point for anyone who wants hip-hop that values silence and texture as much as it values the beat. It is music for the head and the heart in equal measure.
Beautiful Eulogy is a Christian experimental hip hop group and production team from Portland, Oregon, signed to the label Humble Beast. Composed of rappers Braille (Bryan Winchester) and Odd Thomas (Thomas Terry) and producer Courtland Urbano, the group coalesced in 2011 while the three artists were involved in the creation of Braille's seventh release, Native Lungs. Known for its experimental and eclectic sound, the group melds myriad styles of hip hop with genres such as folk, electronic, hymn tunes, and modern worship music. After contributing a song to the charity compilation King Kulture and making a guest appearance on Lecrae's Church Clothes, the band released its debut album, Satellite Kite, on June 19, 2012. A second album, Instruments of Mercy, came out on October 29, 2013. Called one of the most innovative hip hop groups in Portland, Beautiful Eulogy has met with critical acclaim, with particular praise directed at the group's creative, unconventional sound and deep theological lyrics.
