Beginner, originally Absolute Beginner, are architects of the 'Eimsbush' sound that dominated German hip-hop in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Formed in 1991 in Hamburg, the trio of Jan Delay, Denyo, and DJ Mad shifted the genre's focus from imitative US-style rap to a distinctly local vernacular.
Their 1998 album 'Bambule' is considered a seminal work in the German canon, moving the scene away from the 'Die Fantastischen Vier' pop-rap era toward a more authentic, sample-heavy boom-bap aesthetic. The group is noted for its political evolution, starting with radical anti-police sentiments and maturing into a sophisticated blend of social commentary and satire. Jan Delay's subsequent solo success in reggae and funk further enriched the group's palette, leading to the experimental textures found on 'Blast Action Heroes'. After a decade-long hiatus, their 2016 return with 'Advanced Chemistry' debuted at number one, proving their enduring cultural relevance. They remain the primary bridge between old-school German rap and the modern festival circuit.
