Bellows

Bellows is the primary musical vehicle for Brooklyn-based songwriter and producer Oliver Kalb. Emerging in the early 2010s, Bellows became a cornerstone of The Epoch, a DIY collective of Brooklyn artists including Told Slant and Florist.

Kalb's sound identity is built on a 'maximalist bedroom pop' philosophy, where the limitations of home recording are used as creative assets. His early work, particularly 'As If To Say I Hate Daylight', established a signature aesthetic of using a single microphone to capture both instruments and the physical environment, creating a highly tactile, organic sound. Over time, the project evolved to incorporate more complex electronic processing and rhythmic experimentation, as seen on 'Fist & Palm'. Critically, Bellows is praised for its lyrical sincerity and the sophisticated way it blends folk-adjacent songwriting with experimental production. The project occupies a specific niche in the indie-folk and bedroom-pop scenes, influenced by the intimate storytelling of Phil Elverum (The Microphones) and the intricate arrangements of Sufjan Stevens, while maintaining a distinct, jittery energy unique to the Brooklyn DIY community.
