Best Coast

Best Coast, the duo of Bethany Cosentino and Bobb Bruno, emerged in 2009 as the definitive face of the California lo-fi revival. Their sound is a meticulous blend of 1960s surf rock, Phil Spector-style girl group harmonies, and 1990s power pop.

Cosentino's background in the drone group Pocahaunted informed the band's early use of heavy reverb and noise-textured production, which served as a protective layer for her straightforward, confessional songwriting. Their debut, 'Crazy for You', became a cultural touchstone for the 'blog rock' era, defining a specific aesthetic of West Coast nostalgia. Over subsequent albums, they transitioned from bedroom lo-fi to high-fidelity studio work, notably collaborating with producer Jon Brion on 'The Only Place'. This evolution saw them incorporate influences from Fleetwood Mac and country music while maintaining their core identity of 'sun-soaked melancholy'. Critically, they are recognized for bridging the gap between underground noise-pop and mainstream indie, influencing a wave of female-fronted garage rock acts. The band went on hiatus in 2023, marking the end of a decade-long arc that moved from youthful romantic obsession to mature reflections on sobriety and self-actualization.
