bIG fLAME was a Manchester-based trio active between 1983 and 1986, representing the most abrasive and 'anti-rockist' wing of the UK post-punk and C86 scenes. Comprised of Alan Brown, Greg O'Keefe, and Dil Green, the band practiced a philosophy of extreme minimalism and intensity.
They rejected the burgeoning 'indie pop' sweetness of their contemporaries in favor of a sound influenced by The Pop Group and Josef K. Their output was characterized by short-form releases, primarily 7-inch singles, and live sets that rarely lasted longer than twenty minutes. Critically, they are noted for their total avoidance of rock tropes like guitar solos or sentimental lyrics, focusing instead on atonal textures and off-kilter rhythms. Their inclusion on the NME's seminal C86 cassette cemented their place in indie history, though they remained far more aggressive than the 'shambling' bands usually associated with that label. Post-breakup, Alan Brown continued his exploration of angular pop with The Great Leap Forward. The band remains a cult favorite for fans of 'shrieky' post-punk and noise rock.
