Birds of Chicago

Harmonious, soul-drenched roots music that feels like a modern revival. Secular gospel for the weary, the hopeful, and the road-worn.

Intro

Birds of Chicago create a sound that feels both ancient and urgently modern, centered on the breathtaking vocal chemistry between JT Nero and Allison Russell. It is music that breathes with the warmth of a wood-burning stove, blending the grit of Chicago soul with the crystalline purity of Appalachian folk. Their songs often feel like prayers whispered in a crowded bar, balancing heavy themes of mortality and social justice with an unshakeable sense of joy and communal hope.

What truly sets them apart is their self-described 'secular gospel' approach. While the instrumentation is rooted in Americana staples like banjo, acoustic guitar, and Hammond organ, the delivery is pure soul. Nero’s voice has a weathered, fractured quality that provides the perfect counterpoint to Russell’s luminous, bell-like tones. When they harmonize, the music expands into something larger than a duo, capturing the raw, inclusive energy of a traveling revival tent.

To understand their magic, start with 'Real Midnight.' It perfectly encapsulates their ability to find beauty in the dark, showcasing their signature vocal interplay against a backdrop of atmospheric roots production. It is the kind of music that makes you want to gather your favorite people in a room and just listen in silence.

Birds of Chicago is an Americana/folk band founded in March 2012 in Chicago, Illinois, United States. The band is led by husband and wife, JT Nero and Allison Russell. Russell is formerly of the Canadian roots act Po' Girl. The duo-fronted band refers to their music as "secular gospel". Nero, a Midwesterner with strong family ties to Chicago, Illinois, has made the Windy City his home since 2002. Russell grew up in Montreal and has lived with Nero in Chicago since 2009. In 2014, Russell gave birth to their first daughter and hit the road with her four weeks later.
