Blancmange

Blancmange, primarily the duo of Neil Arthur and Stephen Luscombe, emerged from the UK's fertile post-punk and early electronic scene of the late 1970s. While often grouped with the 'Second British Invasion' synth-pop acts, Blancmange maintained a more experimental and art-school identity.

Their early inclusion on the 'Some Bizarre Album' alongside Depeche Mode and Soft Cell cemented their status as pioneers of the genre. Their sound identity is characterized by a unique fusion of Western electronic pop and Eastern melodic influences, most notably the use of sitar on their breakthrough hit 'Living on the Ceiling.' Critically, they are respected for their longevity and Arthur's prolific output following the band's 21st-century reformation. Unlike many of their peers who became heritage acts, Blancmange has continued to release challenging, minimalist electronic music that leans into modular synthesis and abstract structures. Their influence can be heard in the quirky side of indie-electronica and the more rhythmic branches of modern synth-wave.
