Intro

Bonny Cepeda delivers a masterclass in high-energy tropical music that feels like a shot of pure adrenaline. His sound is defined by a massive, sophisticated horn section that punches through the mix with surgical precision, supported by the relentless, galloping rhythm of the tambora and güira. It is music that demands movement, characterized by a bright, sun-drenched optimism that has defined the Dominican dance floor for decades.

What sets Cepeda apart is his formal musical training, which brings a level of harmonic complexity and structural tightness often missing from more casual merengue. As a pianist and arranger, he treats the orchestra like a finely tuned machine, layering call-and-response vocals over intricate piano montunos. There is a sense of 'showmanship' in the production, a polished big-band feel that elevates the street-level energy of merengue into something grand and cinematic.

To experience the peak of his powers, start with his 1980s output like 'Noche de Discotheque' or 'El Mandamás'. These recordings capture the era when he was bridging the gap between traditional rhythms and modern pop sensibilities, earning the first-ever Grammy nomination for a merengue artist. It is the essential soundtrack for any moment that requires maximum joy and physical movement.

Fernando Antonio Cruz Paz, (born June 5, 1954) better known by his stage name Bonny Cepeda, is a Dominican merengue singer. In 1986 he was nominated for a Grammy Award for Top Tropical Latin Performance for his album, Noche de Discotheque. Cruz served as the Vice Minister of Culture of the Dominican Republic (Spanish: Viceministro de Cultura de la República Dominicana) under the 53rd President of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader.
