Booba

Icy, uncompromising French trap with a heavy baritone and cinematic production. The sound of ruthless ambition and late-night city streets.

Intro

Booba sounds like the architectural equivalent of a glass and steel skyscraper in a rough neighborhood: cold, imposing, and undeniably expensive. His music is defined by a deep, resonant baritone that rarely breaks its composure, even when the lyrics are at their most aggressive. The production is often cavernous, utilizing wide-screen synths and heavy 808s that create a sense of lonely, high-stakes grandeur.

What makes him distinctive is his early adoption and mastery of Auto-Tune, not as a pop gimmick, but as a textural layer that makes his voice sound like polished chrome. He pioneered the 'ego-trip' aesthetic in France, blending the bleak realism of 90s New York rap with the futuristic, high-gloss sonics of modern trap. There is a specific tension in his work between the raw street narrative and a detached, almost aristocratic arrogance.

Start with 'Temps Mort' to hear the foundation of French hardcore rap, then move to 'Futur' to experience his transformation into a trap titan. For his most modern, atmospheric work, 'DKR' showcases his ability to blend West African melodic influences with his signature cold-blooded delivery.

Élie Thitia Yaffa (French pronunciation: [eli jafa]; born 9 December 1976), better known under his stage name Booba, is a French rapper. After a brief stint as a break dancer in the early 1990s, Booba partnered with his friend Ali to form Lunatic. The duo released a critically acclaimed album in 2000 but disbanded in 2003. Booba has since embarked on a successful solo career, selling more than 10 million discs over his career and becoming the most downloaded artist (legally) in France. Booba is praised for the quality of his flow and beats but often criticized because of the controversial nature of his lyrics. He has also established the rap label Tallac Records, and developed a line of jewellery.
