Brad formed in 1992 as a collaborative outlet for Stone Gossard (Pearl Jam) and Regan Hagar (Malfunkshun/Satchel), eventually recruiting Shawn Smith and Jeremy Toback. While often labeled a side-project, the band maintained a consistent identity across three decades, characterized by a fusion of Pacific Northwest rock and Prince-influenced soul.
Their 1993 debut, 'Shame', was recorded in just 20 days, establishing a precedent for spontaneous, jam-oriented production. The band's sound evolved into a more polished, atmospheric art-rock style on 1997's 'Interiors', which remains their critical high-water mark. Shawn Smith's vocal presence is the band's most significant differentiator, bringing a neo-soul sensibility to a scene dominated by vocal grit. Following Smith's death in 2019, the band released a final archival album in 2023, cementing their legacy as one of the most sophisticated and enduring offshoots of the original grunge era. They are highly regarded by collectors for their rejection of commercial rock tropes in favor of groove and emotional vulnerability.
