Brain Damage

Brain Damage is a seminal project in the French 'electro-dub' movement, formed in Saint-Etienne in 1999 by Martin Nathan and Raphael Talis. Emerging from the Bangarang collective, they moved away from the roots-reggae orthodoxy of the UK and Jamaican scenes to pioneer a darker, more experimental sound often described as 'emo-dub.'

Their sonic identity is defined by Nathan's sophisticated sound engineering, which utilizes heavy analog saturation, intricate delay feedback, and a focus on the physical impact of sub-bass frequencies. The project is notable for its conceptual ambition, particularly on the 'Spoken Dub Manifesto' series, which integrated diverse vocalists into a unified spoken-word narrative. Throughout their career, they have maintained a bridge between the 'brainy' studio-focused world of IDM/ambient and the visceral, high-energy environment of live dub sound systems. They are central figures in the Jarring Effects label ecosystem and have collaborated with international dub heavyweights like Zion Train and Alpha & Omega, cementing their role as innovators who expanded the genre's emotional and structural boundaries.
