A hazy, genre-blurring collage of trip-hop beats, slacker rap, and soulful hooks. The sound of a long, nostalgic summer night in the city.
Bran Van 3000 sounds like a radio dial being turned slowly across a late-night landscape, catching fragments of hip-hop, disco, rock, and soul. It is music that feels lived-in and slightly dusty, characterized by mid-tempo grooves that invite a gentle sway rather than a frantic dance. There is a persistent sense of space in their arrangements, allowing room for spoken-word snippets and atmospheric samples to breathe.
What makes them distinctive is their collective nature, which results in a kaleidoscopic variety of voices and textures. They master the art of the 'slacker anthem,' combining a laid-back, almost indifferent vocal delivery with sophisticated, multi-layered production. It is the sound of high-concept art school ideas meeting the grit of a basement studio, resulting in something that feels both accidental and meticulously curated.
Start with their debut album, Glee. It perfectly captures the late-90s obsession with genre-mashing and contains their most iconic moments. It is an essential listen for anyone who loves music that feels like a curated mixtape of a very specific, slightly melancholic time and place.
Bran Van 3000 (also known as BV3) is a Canadian alternative rock and hip hop collective from Montreal, Quebec. Founded by James Di Salvio and E.P. Bergen, they collaborated on a number of songs with Stéphane Moraille, Sara Johnston, Steve "Liquid" Hawley, Jayne Hill, Jean Leloup, Kim Bingham, Pierre-Luc Cerat and many other musicians. The name of the group is derived etymologically from Swedish liquor Brännvin, a general term referring to any type of distilled spirit. The name originated as a joke associated with the taupe-coloured Volkswagen Camper Van owned by Bergen in the mid-1990s which was said to run solely on bran flakes, brännvin and brand recognition when carrying the artists on tour around Canada. Between 1996 and 2016, Bran Van 3000 was among the Top 150 selling Canadian artists in Canada.
