Brutto was formed in 2014 by Siarhei Mikhalok immediately following the dissolution of the legendary Lyapis Trubetskoy. While Lyapis had evolved from pop-rock to satirical ska-punk, Brutto represented a radical shift toward a 'hardcore' lifestyle and sound.
Based in Ukraine due to political pressures in Belarus, the band became a central voice in the regional protest culture. Their sound identity is built on high-gain punk rock, often incorporating brass for punch rather than melody, and lyrics that emphasize self-improvement, anti-authoritarianism, and Slavic identity. Critically, they are viewed as a bridge between traditional punk and a modern, sports-influenced 'straight edge' aesthetic.
